Ornery oven kicks off Second Sprucelands session.

So Sunday of the second session kicked off with an interesting twist. While the weather was wonderful and spirits were high, the oven in the kitchen quit half way through cooking supper. Go figure. Wouldn't you know?

Didn't seem to matter to the kids though. Under the direction of our talented counselors, they all moved over to the grassy area by the tennis courts and improvised with a game we played one night last session. It was actually a terrific ice breaker for our new arrivals.

The kids lined up in two equal lines, facing each other. Then one at a time they walked between the lines and were challenged by members on the opposing team to laugh. If the opposite team made them laugh, then they had to join that team. The object of course is to see which team ends up with the most members.

I was impressed with how silly the kids let themselves get, especially our new campers. Of course, they were a little stiff at first and yet that didn't last long at all. Giggles overtook everyone as they made ridiculous comments or curious faces. Some brave campers survived their walk but admittedly it was a challenge.

Nothing like an ornery oven to start the interactions that lead to awesome friendships. It was a spontaneous start to our second session. Supper by the way was delicious. There was strawberry jello cake for dessert. Made our wait worthwhile. Everyone smiled at the rewards for their patience.

Comments always welcome.

  1. So... Yet again we have proof that "EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE AT SPRUCELANDS!" Not expecting or worrying about the unexpected is the key to enjoying the unexpected. Sounds like Sprucelands Mountain to me.

If any of you are parents or friends of children at Sprucelands right now and are wondering how the second session is going, I think this blog shows that your expectations are definitely being met, and more...

And most importantly, I'm sure that "your" Sprucelanders would agree!
